The latest proposals for improvements to the eastern side of Halifax town centre are now available, showing how travel around this part of town will be transformed.

Calderdale Council is delivering the A629 phase 2 Halifax town centre project, an ambitious regeneration project which is fully funded through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund

Work on the project has been progressing well, with the first phase focused around the west of the town. This has included ongoing work at Bull Green, Northgate, Broad Street and Skircoat Road to allow for safe walking and cycling, better facilities for bus journeys, and more efficient junction layouts and signals.

Details of the proposed changes to the Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO), show how the new layouts will work on the eastern side of the town. These include planned improvements around Halifax Rail Station, the Piece Hall, Woolshops, Halifax Bus Station, Broad Street Plaza and routes in and out of the town centre.

Amongst the proposals, the old route along Church Street to the eastern side of the former warehouses known as the Hughes Corporation building, will be reopened as the main road east of Halifax town centre. A new public space will welcome visitors arriving from the rail station, with new crossings providing a safe walking and cycling route into the town centre.

Residents and businesses on the affected routes have been contacted, with details of how to have their say on the proposals. This is part of an informal engagement ahead of a formal Traffic Regulation Order consultation later this year.

Full details of the proposals can be found at Traffic Regulation Order – East (external link), along with information about how to share feedback on the plans. Comments can be submitted until Friday 14 March 2025.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, Cllr Sarah Courtney, said:

“Millions of pounds of investment is transforming Halifax town centre, with improved spaces and layouts aiming to make travel safer and more efficient.

“Work is currently underway to the west of the town, but the next phase of the project is focused on the eastern side, including the busy visitor destinations of the Piece Hall, library, rail station and Woolshops shopping centre.

“We want to make it easier for people to move between these key locations, with proposals for the eastern phase including improved connections from the rail station and better access to the bus station. Changes to road layouts will also reduce congestion and reroute through traffic away from the town centre.

“To introduce these changes, a number of Traffic Regulation Orders are currently being advertised. We’re offering people the chance to have their say on the proposals for this section as part of informal engagement, ahead of a formal TRO consultation later this year.”

The A629 phase 2 Halifax town centre project has receivedfunding through the West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund, and the Leeds City Region Growth Deal – a £1 billion package of Government investment delivered by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to accelerate growth and create jobs across Leeds City Region.
