Bring shopping to life and Love your local market

Love your local market

Residents, visitors and wannabe traders are being encouraged to support Calderdale’s fantastic markets.

From 14 May 2014 to 28 May 2014, it’s Love your local market fortnight. Each year, more than 700 markets across the UK join forces to raise the profile of local markets in an attempt to bring shopping back into the heart of local communities. As ever, Calderdale markets have lots to see and do!

Calderdale is a place where there’s a real buzz in the air. People talking, shopping, meeting and buying from local people they trust. Our promise is simple. Our markets aren’t like typical supermarkets where you get what you need and go, they’re bursting at the seams with energy and friendliness. During love your local market fortnight, there’s no better time to visit your local market to find something that’s special, unique, tastes great, looks different or simply better value than other retailers.

As well as our regular markets that take place, we’re holding some special markets across Calderdale to mark love your local market fortnight:

  • Hebden Bridge local produce, arts and craft market, Sunday 25 and Monday 26 May 2014, from 9.00am until 4.00pm
  • Sowerby Bridge totally locally summer market, Sunday 18 May 2014 from 9.00am until 4.00pm

Calderdale Council’s Director for Economy and Environment, Ian Gray said:

“Not only do our shoppers receive quality and great value, they benefit from a shopping experience very different to typical chain store retailers. Shopping at Calderdale markets allows shoppers to browse at their leisure, soak in years of history and have real conversation with people who are passionate about the products they sell – bringing the shopping experience to life. “

Markets across Calderdale serve regular customers of all ages and from all walks of life. We’re actively bringing our markets up to date to appeal to customers of all ages. If you use the internet whilst out shopping, you can now connect to the world using our free Wifi at Halifax Borough Market. This means that you can shop and surf under one roof! During love your local market fortnight, Calderdale markets have a freebie for all. Give us your email address either online or via one of your local friendly market traders and we’ll give you a free love your local market shopping bag to take all your goodies home in. From June 2014, you’ll receive updates of our latest offers, new stalls and products and much more.

During May, we’re also giving people the chance to trade at our markets across Calderdale. We’re always on the lookout for new ideas and exciting products, so why not give market trading a go? With a friendly experienced team and great rental incentives, now’s the time to give it a go!

Ian Gray added:

“There’s no better opportunity to support your local markets during this national campaign. Our markets provide a business base for many people who work and live in Calderdale. A key thing about local markets is that many products are made with local hands – cheeses from Todmorden, chocolates from the valleys and even pies from Halifax. Supporting local businesses is really important; the more we support our local traders, the more successful they become.”
