The suspension of parking charges in flood affected areas of Calderdale has now been extended until the end of February 2016.
After the unprecedented flooding of Boxing Day, Calderdale Council announced that parking charges in flood affected areas would be formally suspended, to help communities return to normal.
Charges were due to be reintroduced in these areas on Monday 1 February, but the Council is now extending this period of relief until the end of February.
All pay and display charges in Council car parks in Elland, Brighouse, Sowerby Bridge, Hebden Bridge and Todmorden, as well as charges for on-street parking in Hebden Bridge will continue to be suspended, to help alleviate pressure for residents and businesses in the area.
However, Civil Enforcement Officers will be reintroduced to these areas to enforce on-street parking restrictions, including any time limited restrictions which should assist in the turnover of spaces to support the local businesses and trade, improve road safety and assist traffic flow.
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, Cllr Barry Collins, said:
“We’re doing everything we can to help the recovery process in the towns affected by the flooding, and by extending the suspension of parking charges we hope that it will make it easier for businesses to return to normal.
“Although free parking in flood affected towns will continue, enforcement of on-street time limits will be reintroduced to help keep a good turnover of spaces. This is particularly important for shops which have reopened and are receiving deliveries.”
