People living, working, studying or visiting Calderdale are being asked to share their feedback on their regular journeys, how and why they travel and what the future of travel should look like in the borough.
Calderdale Council is developing a new borough-wide transport strategy to plan for the future of travel in the borough and wider region. This will replace the existing strategy and cover the period up to 2040.
The new strategy will align with the wider West Yorkshire Local Transport Plan and will guide the future of transport in the borough. It will look at how an effective transport network can enable growth, improve connectivity, support climate action, and enhance people’s quality of life.
To help inform the detail of the strategy, the Council is seeking feedback on the draft vision and objectives for future travel. The survey also aims to find out more about people’s existing journeys, how they travel and how this could be improved in the future.
People can have their say at Project: Calderdale Transport Strategy | Calderdale Council(external link), by completing a short online survey. Comments can also be emailed directly to transport.strategy@calderdale.gov.uk and paper copies are also available to download.
In addition to online surveys, the Council is also hosting sessions with local schools and community groups to ensure different voices are heard. Volunteer engagement champions will also be collecting quick feedback with people across the borough, and encouraging further participation in the full survey.
The survey is open until Sunday 27 July. After this date, all feedback will be reviewed to help inform the full Draft Transport Strategy, which will be shared for further public consultation in October 2025 before the final plan is approved.
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, Cllr Sarah Courtney, said:
“Our experiences when we travel matter. Whether walking, wheeling, cycling, driving or using public transport, we all want to get from A to B effectively and efficiently. We want people to share their travel experiences and the challenges that can be faced, to help shape a transport system that works for everyone in Calderdale.
“Calderdale’s current transport strategy was adopted in 2016. The way we live, work and travel has changed significantly since then, with the impact of the COVID pandemic, the rising cost of living and our awareness of the climate emergency all affecting our travel habits.
“We’re developing a new strategy, which will also feed into regional transport plans. It’s important that this is shaped by the people who regularly use our transport network, so we want to hear people’s thoughts about what works, what doesn’t and how we can take steps towards a better transport future for everyone.”
