New cycle storage is now in place in Mytholmroyd, offering nearby residents the chance to store bikes safely and conveniently.
As part of priority work to support active travel and help tackle the climate emergency, Calderdale Council has offered residents the chance to register interest in having a cycle hangar installed for local people to use.
Cycle hangars take up only a car parking space and can store up to six standard bikes. Following resident demand, the first of these hangars has now been installed on Scout Road, outside Woodbine Terrace in Mytholmroyd.
The hangar has been funded by Hebden Royd Town Council and will be managed by Calderdale Council.
Engagement with residents has happened throughout the process, agreeing the most suitable location and those interested in using the hangar given details of how they can be assigned a designated space for their bike.
Further hangars are due to be installed elsewhere in the borough, with the next planned installation in Todmorden later this year.
Various factors determine where hangars are placed, but locations are mainly chosen based on demand in an area. To find out more, or to register interest in having a cycle hangar, visit https://new.calderdale.gov.uk/leisure/cycling/cycle-parking(external link)
Cllr Steve Woodhead, Hebden Royd Town Council, said:
“Hebden Royd Town Council (HRTC) is pleased to provide financial support to Calderdale Council for the new cycle hangar in Mytholmroyd.
“This scheme is a great example of how collaboration can deliver practical, sustainable solutions for our communities. With Calderdale identifying key locations and overseeing its management, it’s exciting to see these improvements making cycling a more accessible option for residents.
“The project reflects HRTC’s ongoing commitment to building a greener Hebden Royd.”
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Action and Housing, Cllr Scott Patient, said:
“Cycling is a great way to get around, and many people across the borough enjoy getting out on their bike, either for pleasure or using for everyday travel. Choosing cycling for our journeys also helps support our work to improve air quality and tackle the climate emergency, so we want to do all we can to help more residents choose cycling as an option.
“It’s great that the first cycle hangar has now been installed in Mytholmroyd, with thanks to Hebden Royd Town Council for the funding of this pilot. We hope to see more of these storage facilities installed at other locations across the borough and people can still register their interest on our website.
“We know that ensuring that bikes can be stored safely and conveniently is really important, especially for those with limited space at their home, so we’re supporting a cycle storage scheme. Many residents have already been registering their interest in the scheme and these requests have been assessed to identify the most popular and suitable locations.”
