Temporary changes at Todmorden Library

Calderdale Council

Todmorden Library users are advised to prepare for upcoming temporary changes to library services, whilst work takes place to replace part of the building’s roof.

Parts of the extension to the original Todmorden library building contain reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), which can weaken over time.

Regular monitoring has taken place at the library for some time. This includes carrying out scans of the relevant areas to check for movement. While these scans have not identified any issues with the structure, as a precaution and to give complete assurance to staff and the public, the Council is removing the RAAC from the roof.

To allow for the start of work, the library will be fully closed from Monday 17 February 2025, whilst staff reset the space.

The library will reopen on Saturday 22 February. However, there will be a reduced service, with a smaller than usual selection of book stock and a limited amount of study space. There will also be reduced heating and some of the works could be noisy. The works are scheduled to be complete in summer 2025.

The library computers will still be available, and customers can access stock from other libraries, using the free reservation service. A range of free digital library services, including eBooks, can also be accessed on the Council’s website, 24/7.

The accessible entrance to the library will be out of use from Friday 14 February and throughout the works period. During this time, a click and collect service will be available from inside Todmorden Market Hall, which will allow those who can’t access the library to reserve and collect items from a more accessible location. The opening hours here will be Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 3pm and Saturday from 10am to 1pm.

Todmorden Sports Centre is also one of the borough’s designated warm and welcoming spaces, providing a social space, with warm drinks and accessible toilets. Anyone is welcome to turn up on Wednesdays from 2.30 until 4.30pm and Fridays from 10am until 12noon. Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Resources, Cllr Silvia Dacre, said:

“We’ve been working on a solution to the issues with the roof at Todmorden Library for some time and we’re now at a point where we can replace the section of roof which contains RAAC.

“Although our regular monitoring has not identified any safety concerns with the material, it’s important that we remove the RAAC to prevent any issues in future.

“Careful planning has taken place to minimise the impact on customers and ensure that we can continue to offer a service despite the works. However, whilst work is underway, there will be some disruption for library users, including some extra noise at times, and reduced heating.”

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Service and Communities, Cllr Danielle Durrans, said:

“We understand how important the library service is for people in Todmorden and whilst construction work takes places at the library, we’ve put in place measures to minimise disruption as much as possible.

“Although the main building will be closed for just a few days, we acknowledge that the accessible entrance will be out of action for a longer period, so we’re offering a click and collect service at Todmorden Market Hall throughout the disruption period. Our online resources will also be available 24/7, as usual.

“People can also enjoy alternative warm and welcoming spaces, including the provision at Todmorden Sports Centre, providing a friendly and welcoming space where people can meet, chat and enjoy activities.”
