Wainhouse Tower to turn purple for Workers’ Memorial Day

Wainhouse Tower lit up purple

Calderdale Council is paying tribute to all the workers across the borough and the world who have tragically died in the last year, by lighting up Wainhouse Tower purple on Workers’ Memorial Day (Wednesday 28 April).

This internationally recognised day honours everyone around the world who has tragically lost their life, been injured or become ill through work.

Wainhouse Tower will join buildings lighting up throughout the country in this act of remembrance.

Robin Tuddenham, Calderdale Council’s Chief Executive, said:

“Every Workers’ Memorial Day, we unite to remember all the people across the globe who have sadly died or become seriously ill because of their work. This year’s commemoration is even more poignant, as we have seen so much loss and sacrifice due to COVID-19. Our thoughts are with everyone who has tragically lost loved ones and colleagues.

“We are extremely grateful for the many frontline and key workers who have selflessly continued to work throughout the pandemic to help others. Although we are unable to gather to pay tribute because of the current restrictions, lighting up Wainhouse Tower is a symbol of Calderdale’s joint grief, reflection and kindness.”

The Council always does everything it can to protect its own employees and workers across the borough. It has teams providing support and guidance to all Council services, and advises businesses across Calderdale on workplace health, safety and welfare. Where necessary, the Council enforces health and safety at work legislation in retailers, wholesalers, offices, catering premises, leisure services and consumer services.

During the pandemic, the Council and partner organisations have worked around the clock to support workplaces, including distributing millions of PPE items, helping businesses to be COVID-secure, increasing access to testing and vaccinations, visiting and advising workplaces, and enforcing COVID-19 restrictions if needed.

The iconic Wainhouse Tower in Halifax will light up purple on the evening of Wednesday 28 April.
