A thriving future for Mixenden Activity Centre

Cllr Silvia Dacre outside Halifax Town Hall

The future of Mixenden Activity Centre is being discussed by Calderdale Council’s Cabinet.

The Council-owned site in north Halifax closed in 2020 but has been used since to support specific community services, including the Healthy Holidays Programme and youth clubs. It also previously provided a temporary home for Mixenden Library.

To support a viable long-term future for the centre, the Council’s Cabinet agreed that the centre should be made available as a potential Community Asset Transfer.

The North Halifax Partnership (NHP) has been running the site on an interim basis, with a long-term view of entering into a Community Asset Transfer arrangement. The group has now submitted an initial business case to fully take over the running of the centre, setting out its intentions for the future of the site.

The proposals from NHP recognise that Mixenden Activity Centre is an important community asset. The organisation wants to rejuvenate the centre as an accessible space with an offer for everyone, bringing a diverse range of activities and opportunities to the local community. This could include:

  • Community activities – providing space for public forums and meetings, physical activity sessions and community group use, plus the potential for a community café.
  • Service delivery – employment and skills sessions, Family Hub work and health and wellbeing sessions.
  • Business and enterprise – room hire for private events, climbing wall activities and a bike co-op.
  • Outdoor space – community gardens and allotments, physical activities including running and cycling.

Cabinet Members will be asked to consider the options for the future of the centre and determine whether the NHP’s proposals should now progress to development of a full business case within the next six months.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Resources, Cllr Silvia Dacre, said:

“We want Calderdale communities to be able to thrive. Last year we worked with local people and partners to develop the North Halifax Strategy, an ambitious 10-year plan which is already transforming the area.

“The North Halifax Partnership is a key partner in this work and the organisation has a long track record of delivering services, support and opportunities across the area.

“The organisation has already been managing the day-to-day running of Mixenden Activity Centre, but the submission of an initial business case marks a milestone in securing the long-term future of the site. NHP’s proposals aim to transform the centre into a vibrant community hub shaped by local people, and Cabinet will now discuss the next steps in the Community Asset Transfer process.

“This is an exciting time for north Halifax with the area also benefitting from the Government’s Pride in Place funding, with £20m of investment being delivered over the next 10 years.”

The next steps for Mixenden Activity Centre will be discussed at the meeting of Calderdale Council’s Cabinet on Monday 8 December 2025 at Halifax Town Hall. The meeting will also be live streamed online at https://calderdale.public-i.tv/core/portal/home(external link)
