Halifax has retained its Purple Flag, recognising the town as a safe and vibrant destination.
Purple Flag is the gold standard for town centres, like Green Flag for parks and Blue Flag for beaches. The award scheme recognises excellence in the management of the evening and night-time economy.
October is Purple Flag month, and as part of this, Calderdale’s Community Safety Partnership will be out and about in Halifax on Friday 25 October promoting the Purple Flag.
Promotional materials will be given out to those enjoying a night out and patrols, checks and enforcement activities will be stepped up at venues and other locations around the town centre.
Obtaining a Purple Flag shows that a town’s night-time economy offers clean and safe environments, great bars and clubs, a variety of arts and cultural attractions and excellent transport links.
Halifax was the first town in West Yorkshire to be awarded a Purple Flag and has retained its status for the ninth year running. It was achieved by meeting or surpassing the standards of excellence required as part of the Purple Flag scheme, which are assessed by external inspectors.
In this year’s report, assessors were particularly impressed with the growing tourism offer of the town. They commented on the growth, resilience and strength of the visitor economy and were also impressed by the popularity of The Piece Hall and its impact on the town.
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Services and Communities, Cllr Susan Press, said:
“A Purple Flag is the sign of a safe and welcoming night out and we’re proud that Halifax has been a Purple Flag holder since 2010.
“Retaining the award is a priority for the Community Safety Partnership and our joint working helps Halifax remain a vibrant and safe destination for local people and visitors.
“I’d also like to recognise the important contributions of all the voluntary groups and community organisations who operate in the evening in Halifax, working so hard to ensure everyone has an enjoyable time in our town centre.”
Inspector Pam Quinn, of Halifax Neighbourhood Policing Team, added:
“We are proud of our Purple Flag status and continue to work as part of the Community Safety Partnership to ensure Halifax town centre remains a safe place to work, visit and socialise in.
“Calderdale police, our partners and volunteers, including the Halifax Street Angels, remain committed to keeping crime to a minimum and reducing the number of incidents involving the emergency services.
“We regularly hold operations and enforcement activity to ensure those visiting Halifax feel safe and look forward to celebrating Calderdale’s success on 25th of October.”
The Community Safety Partnership is made up of representatives from Calderdale Council, West Yorkshire Police, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Calderdale NHS, Together Housing and other public and voluntary sector organisations. The partnership works together to help everyone in Calderdale feel safe and protected at all times.
