Calderdale Council and the Community Foundation for Calderdale have supported organisations to run Healthy Holiday schemes during the school holidays that provide lots of different activities for children to try and also offer healthy meals and snacks too.
During the December school holidays, children in Calderdale have been having so much fun trying new activities such as street surfing, canoeing and learning how to build fires safely, which they haven’t had the opportunity to try before, that it has got the attention of the Department for Education who fund the programme and they have made a video about it.
Steve Duncan, CEO of the Community Foundation for Calderdale said:
“The people running these schemes work had to make sure that the activities are fun and engaging and it’s great that young people are improving their confidence and life skills too. We know that we like to have fun in Calderdale, and we’re pleased that our community stands out nationally for so many people enjoying taking part in the scheme.”
Cllr Tim Swift, Calderdale Council’s Leader, added:
“We’re delighted with the success of the Healthy Holidays schemes in Calderdale, thanks to amazing teamwork from organisations across the borough and the support of local families. The summer programme alone provided 15,000 free activities in 43 venues. Once again, it’s great to see the joy that the winter scheme activities are bringing to children and young people, and now the whole country can also see the difference it’s making to so many families. These new experiences could open up a range of opportunities for young people in the future.”
