Work at the new Mixenden Community Hub is entering the final stages.
Calderdale Council is delivering the new hub building in Mixenden, which will become the heart of the local community – a place where residents can go to access a range of services and opportunities.
Work has been progressing well, with the building exterior now complete. The final stage of work is now taking place to the building’s interior and the car park, to prepare the units for the new occupants.
The range of facilities on site will include:
- a Primary Care Network Hub for north Halifax to deliver community healthcare services (in addition to the nearby GP surgery, and supported by the Calderdale Cares Partnership).
- a shop or office space for rent.
- a community garden.
- a library with easy-to-access facilities, advice, and IT equipment in a modern and welcoming environment.
The new community garden will be in the place of the old library, which has now been demolished to make way for the necessary landscaping works. Features in the garden include planting beds and environmental systems to collect and slowly release rainwater which will help to prevent flooding and support local wildlife.
Work on site is expected to be complete by summer 2024.
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Towns, Tourism and Voluntary Sector, Cllr Sarah Courtney, said:
“It’s great to see work coming together at the Mixenden Hub site, supporting our priority for thriving towns and places. It’s been a long-standing ambition of the Council to transform this previously derelict site into a community facility and we’re now approaching the final stages of work.
“Once complete, the building will be a real focal point for the community, bringing together important services and providing active and social opportunities for people in the north Halifax area.”
The development of Mixenden Community Hub is an important part of the Council’s wider package of improvements within the Strategic Plan for north Halifax.
The investment in north Halifax is part of the Next Chapter for Calderdale to enable economic growth, reduce inequalities and build a sustainable future. For more information about this and other major developments in Calderdale, visit www.calderdalenextchapter.co.uk(external link) .
