Calderdale Council has approved a £500,000 contribution towards funding for a new extra care scheme for people with dementia.
The proposed scheme would provide housing for 46 adults with dementia and learning disabilities and provide a range of personalised care services to help them continue to live independently. Funding from the scheme has been awarded by the Department of Health and a grant application will now be submitted to the Homes and Communities Agency for the rest of the cost.
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Social Care, Cllr Bob Metcalfe said:
“We estimate that there are 2,300 people with dementia in Calderdale and that there is likely to be a potential 75% increase by 2030.
“Currently we have a limited number of extra care schemes which are available to people with dementia. Yet we know that people who live in extra care schemes are less likely to need residential care.
“By providing more specialised extra care housing now can ensure that more people can stay in their own home for longer, in safety and comfort and able to maintain a good quality of life.”
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy and Environment, Cllr Barry Collins added:
“We want to double the number of extra care places in Calderdale by 2015 and this proposed scheme will help us to reach this target. We have identified a potential site in Brighouse and we are now working hard to put the funding in place to make this a reality. We want Calderdale to be a place where people are healthy, safe and supported by the services they need, whatever their circumstances.”
