Todmorden Town Hall is hosting events this June as part of the national Great Get Together neighbourhood celebrations.
The Great Get Together is a nationwide invitation for communities to come together on the weekend of 16- 18 June, and celebrate all we have in common. The initiative is inspired by Jo Cox, and has been created by her family and friends.
On Saturday 17 June, Todmorden will host their own Great Get Together events, featuring a Fix-it Café, a summer Kidsfest and a Community Iftar.
The Fix-it Café and Kidsfest will take place in the Town Hall from 2-4pm. Anyone is welcome to come along and ‘Get Together’.
Calderdale Council’s Head of Neighbourhoods, Andrew Pitts, said:
“The Great Get Together is expected to be the biggest event of its kind since the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012. The idea is to bring people together to celebrate their common interests and find out more about their local community.
“These varied events in Todmorden will run alongside events up and down the country and will give local people the chance to meet friends and neighbours, have fun and perhaps learn something new.”
The Fix-it Café is an opportunity for people to bring along broken household items and learn how to fix them – guided by our volunteer fixers. There will be fix-it guidance on general carpentry (chairs, tables etc), dolls and teddies, clothing and fabric, and cycle maintenance.
At the same time there will also be a summer Kidsfest, packed full of fun and creative activities for children and families. If that’s not enough, there will also be a Vintage Café running in the Courtroom.
The events are free, but any donations, along with profits from the café, will all go to the Jo Cox Foundation.
To round off the day, in the evening there will be a Community Iftar, or opening of the fast, hosted by Todmorden Integrate and Todmorden Mosque. Community members will be invited to learn about the meaning of Ramadan and then join Todmorden’s Muslim community to enjoy some delicious food together. This event is invitation only, but if you’d like to attend, please contact kirsten.fussing@calderdale.gov.uk.
