Make your mark for markets this Christmas

This Christmas, give the gift of your vote to Calderdale markets! The National Association of British Markets Authorities (NABMA) is looking for Britain’s Favourite Market, and is asking people across the UK to cast their vote before the end of December 2014. To help Calderdale markets achieve this coveted title, simply go to www.nabma.com/britainsfavouritemarket(external link) and enter the name of the local market you love the most!

To help you decide, why not pay a visit to your local market? If you haven’t been in a while, this is the perfect time of year to get reacquainted. There’s lots going on across all markets in Calderdale, and you’ll find everything you need for a fabulous festive season.

Whatever you like to eat at Christmas you’ll find it all at your local market, from traditional meat dishes with all the trimmings, to great party food such as cheeses, chutneys, breads, pastries and olives. Our friendly traders can offer advice and information about all their products and even give a little inspiration about what to cook or buy.

Whether you’re hosting a party or just trying to find the perfect outfit, there are decorations, balloons and fancy dress costumes available to take you right through the party season.

If it’s gift ideas you’re after then look no further, Calderdale markets are bursting with handmade jewellery, local arts and crafts and even have traders ready to show you how to make your own gifts, such as knitted jumpers and cards.

On Saturdays throughout December Halifax is hosting food, produce and craft markets along with Hebden Bridge every Sunday. In Sowerby Bridge there’s a Totally Locally Christmas market on Sunday 7 December and an Artsbridge market on Sunday 14 December.  Plus Ripponden is hosting a community market, also on Sunday 14 December. For all your last minute items Halifax Borough Market and Todmorden Market Hall are open on Sunday 21 December.

Shopping at Calderdale markets allows shoppers to browse at their leisure, soak in years of history and have a conversation with people who are passionate about the products they sell – bringing the shopping experience to life.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy, Cllr Peter Caffrey, said:

“We have some fantastic markets in Calderdale and by voting for them in NABMA’s Britain’s Favourite Market competition we can show the rest of the country what Calderdale markets have to offer.

“By choosing to shop in Calderdale markets, not only will you receive quality and great value, but you’ll also benefit from a shopping experience very different from typical chain store retailers. I hope that people visit their local market this Christmas, experience the fantastic atmosphere and cast their vote to recognise their favourite.”
