Ofsted success for Calderdale schools

Two schools in Calderdale are celebrating after receiving good Ofsted ratings.

Ling Bob Junior, Infant and Nursery School in Pellon and Cross Lane Primary and Nursery School in Elland, were both inspected by Ofsted at the end of last year. Both schools were rated as ‘good’ by Ofsted and received glowing reports from the inspectors.

Ling Bob School was visited by inspectors over two days in November 2017. Throughout the inspection, inspectors spoke with pupils, staff and governors, as well as reviewing responses to the online questionnaire for parents.

Inspectors found that pupils were progressing well across a wide range of subjects and especially in reading, writing and mathematics. Pupils enjoyed reading and were eager to read to inspectors.

They found the school to be a calm and welcoming place where pupils behaved well both inside and outside the classroom. They commented on the good teaching and found that pupils were improving quickly.

Inspectors also visited Cross Lane Primary and Nursery School in November 2017 and observed 12 lessons across all years. Inspectors noted that the school had improved since its last inspection and praised the headteacher’s strong commitment and drive for these improvements, as well as the skilled deputy head and effective governing body.

Inspectors spoke to pupils and found that they enjoyed their lessons and were proud of their school. They also noted that pupils were excited to learn and found lessons interesting and fun and teachers planned interesting topics that engaged pupils well.

The Headteacher of Cross Lane Primary and Nursery School, Vivien Watson, said:

“It has been nothing but a pleasure to work at Cross Lane. The staff, children and community deserve considerable praise for their efforts to make the school a fabulous place to grow and learn together.

“We are very excited about plans to move on to even greater levels and are currently building on the strengths of the school to redesign a curriculum that is world class and will give our children the absolute best start in life.

“I hope for the school to always be a place that I would be proud to send my own children.”

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services, Cllr Megan Swift, said:

“A lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes to ensure that schools in Calderdale are places where people enjoy learning and achieve their best.

“It’s great that more Calderdale schools are receiving such positive reports from Ofsted, and I’d like to congratulate both Ling Bob and Cross Lane schools on their successful ratings.”
