Garden waste collections in Calderdale will resume from Monday 4 May 2020.
The service was temporarily suspended by Calderdale Council and contractors SUEZ due to COVID-19, to provide extra staff support for the main waste and recycling collection service.
Fortnightly garden waste collections will now resume for existing subscribers on their usual collection day. Residents with subscriptions will be contacted directly by email or letter with further details. The missed collections this year will be taken into account and although details are still being worked out, residents will not miss out or be charged for collections they did not receive while the service was suspended.
Unfortunately no new subscriptions can be taken out at this time. If residents without a subscription need to dispose of garden waste during this lockdown period, the best way is through home composting. Calderdale residents who haven’t already got a composting bin can get a special rate at https://getcomposting.com/(external link).
The Council is also considering reopening selected Household Waste Recycling Centres, but first needs to ensure that this can be done safely and in line with government guidelines around non-essential travel and social distancing. Bulky waste collections continue to be suspended.
As always, we urge residents to manage their waste responsibly and remember that fly tipping is illegal and can lead to prosecution. Any incidents of fly tipping can be reported using the online form at www.calderdale.gov.uk/doitonline(external link).
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Services and Communities, Cllr Susan Press, said:
“Keeping kerbside waste and recycling collections running during this difficult time has been our priority, but we’re now looking to slowly reintroduce certain services, as long as this can be done safely and efficiently.
“Although residents with garden waste subscriptions have been very understanding whilst services have been suspended, we know that the resumption of fortnightly collections will be very welcome. To help us deliver the best service, we still ask residents to compost waste where possible to limit the amount of garden waste that will need to be collected.
“I’d like to offer my thanks and appreciation to all the waste and recycling teams who continue to work hard to keep our collection service going during this time.”
