The new Mixenden Community Hub is taking shape, with completed work at the hub building including the construction of external walls, cladding panels, roof and drainage, the fitting of windows and doors and the installation of some utility services.
The Hub will become the heart of the area, a place where residents can go to access services and opportunities.
Calderdale Council and its construction partner, Code Building Solutions Limited, are working together to deliver this important part of the wider package of improvements within the Strategic Plan for North Halifax.
Construction work is progressing well with the next stage of work concentrating on the inside of the building by installing partitions, plastering and decorating, bringing the space to life. Following this, the external works including the demolition of the existing library will commence in the new year.
Once complete, the facility will be a focal point for the local community. There will be a range of facilities on site, including:
- a Primary Care Network Hub for north Halifax to deliver community healthcare services (in addition to the existing nearby GP surgery, and supported by the Calderdale Cares Partnership);
- a shop or office space for rent;
- a community garden;
- a library with easy-to-access facilities, advice, and IT equipment in a modern and welcoming environment.
The building will perform to a high environmental standard. Features such as the community garden and systems to collect and slowly release rainwater will help to prevent flooding and support local wildlife.
Work on site is expected to be complete by early 2024.
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Towns, Tourism and Voluntary Sector, Cllr Sarah Courtney, said:

“The transformation of this previously derelict site will make a real difference to the local area. The project is being funded by the Council, showing our commitment to Mixenden and the wider north Halifax community.”
