A week-long programme of events will highlight that safeguarding vulnerable children and adults is everyone’s business.
Calderdale Safeguarding Partnership is joining partnerships across West Yorkshire to host activities and events as part of Safeguarding Week (Monday 24- Friday 28 June), an annual campaign to raise awareness of the support available to protect vulnerable children and adults across West Yorkshire and help people to recognise and know how to report any concerns.
Events will be delivered throughout the week, to highlight important safeguarding issues, start conversations and raise awareness of safeguarding best practice to protect vulnerable children and adults.
Each of the five West Yorkshire Safeguarding Partnerships will host a day, to present a topic of their choice, with events open to all practitioners and managers from across the region, as well as volunteers and community groups, who work with children and/or adults.
Calderdale’s Safeguarding Partnership event will take place online on Thursday 27 June from 1 – 4.30pm focusing on the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and deprivation of liberty issues for those aged 16 and above.
The half-day session will take place online, with people asked to register their place on MS Teams(external link). Those attending will hear from speaker Neil Allen, a barrister and senior lecturer at the University of Manchester with academic works on the Mental Health Act 1983, Mental Capacity Act 2005, and deprivation of liberty. In addition to the use of case studies to assist learning, participants will be encouraged to identify their own legal and practice issues for discussion.
Calderdale’s Safeguarding Children Partnership, Safeguarding Adult Board and other organisations are also hosting a range of in-person and online events throughout the week, as part of a borough-specific Calderdale Safeguarding Week. This includes a session to ‘Meet the teams who work together to safeguard children’, with presentations from various agencies explaining their role and how to access their service. The full events programme and booking details can be found at Safeguarding Week Programme of Events 2024
Calderdale Council’s Director for Children and Young People’s Services, Julie Jenkins, said:
“We’re once again joining forces with our colleagues across West Yorkshire to deliver a programme of Safeguarding Week events across a broad range of themes.
“It’s important everyone takes an active role in safeguarding, and this week is our opportunity to share learning opportunities across West Yorkshire and remind everyone of their responsibility in making sure vulnerable children and adults across our communities are safe.
“We take safeguarding issues incredibly seriously and we do all we can to ensure that appropriate support is provided, and people are protected from harm.
“The many online and in person events throughout the week aim to raise awareness and increase knowledge about safeguarding children, safeguarding adults and domestic abuse, highlighting that safeguarding is everyone’s business.”
