Have your say to shape travel in north east Calderdale

Cllr Sarah Courtney, Calderdale Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport

People are invited to have their say on plans to make it easier, safer and greener to travel around north east Calderdale.

Calderdale Council is working with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority on improved travel options around the areas of Halifax and Stump Cross, Northowram, Shelf, and Hipperholme.

The Connecting North East Calderdale project aims to address long-standing issues with congestion, especially at peak times, improve facilities for people walking, wheeling, and cycling, and improve the reliability of local bus services on and around this busy route through Calderdale.

Proposals are focused around the A58 and A6036, between Halifax and Stump Cross. They include:

  • new bus lanes to reduce journey times;
  • upgraded bus stops;
  • improved access for people walking or wheeling to Shibden Hall;
  • new crossings at New Bank, Godley Lane and Stump Cross.

This is the first set of proposals to come out of the Connecting North East Calderdale project. The project, funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority includes the development of further proposals for travel improvements for Northowram, Shelf and Hipperholme which will be subject to future consultation.

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority funding will also support an early feasibility study to examine whether a new train station at Hipperholme could be viable.

This is purely exploratory at this stage, with no current commitment to deliver a station as part of the Connecting North East Calderdale project.

People are invited to have their say about the improvement proposals by completing the survey at Connecting North East Calderdale | Your Voice(external link).  Paper copies of the survey are available to complete at Halifax Central Library. The survey is available now and runs until Monday 10 November 2025.

There are also drop-in events to meet the project team and view the plans, at:

  • Halifax Town Hall – Saturday 11 October 2025, 10.30am–2.30pm
  • Belgrave Social Club – Monday 20 October 2025, 4–8pm

The feedback collected will be used to inform the further development of the proposals.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, Cllr Sarah Courtney, said:

“The north east Calderdale area includes many residential communities as well as popular tourist attractions, including Shibden Hall and Park. We want to make it easier to travel between Halifax and the villages in the north east of the borough, addressing the travel problems that local people have told us about.

“Using funding from the Combined Authority, we’re exploring a number of improvement options, including ways in which we can enable buses in the area to operate more effectively.

“We’re keen to hear people’s thoughts on the initial proposals, as well as feedback about options to further improve travel in future. There are lots of ways to have your say, from online surveys to drop in events, so please share your thoughts and help shape the future of travel around the north east of Calderdale.”

Cllr Peter Carlill, Deputy Chair of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport Committee, said:

“Our plans for an integrated Weaver Network are about making everyday journeys safer and easier for everyone.

“Through this project we’re looking to add new crossings, making places like Shibden Hall more accessible, as well as introducing new bus lanes and better bus stops.

“Your voice matters in shaping these improvements and creating a better-connected West Yorkshire, with safer, greener, and more reliable travel for all.”
