On Sunday 9 November, people across the country will commemorate Remembrance Sunday, and events are taking place across Calderdale to mark this important occasion.

Calderdale Council is supporting Remembrance events across the borough, and hosting events in Halifax.

The Mayor of Calderdale and other dignitaries will join the community at commemorations in Halifax on Sunday 9 November and on Armistice Day, Tuesday 11 November, to honour those who served and sacrificed.

This year’s Remembrance Sunday parade will start at Halifax Town Hall, with dignitaries and veterans arriving from 10am. The parade will march to the Cenotaph along Princess Street, Southgate, Horton Street, Square Road and King Street.

The service and Act of Remembrance will take place at the Cenotaph at 10.45am with a two-minute silence at 11am, followed by a further service inside Halifax Minster.

On Tuesday 11 November a short service of Remembrance will take place for Armistice Day at the Duke of Wellington Memorial Statue at the top of Woolshops, with a two-minute silence at 11am.

Events are also taking place in towns and villages in Calderdale, with services at war memorials and local churches across the borough.

The Mayor of Calderdale, Cllr Steven Leigh MBE, said:

“I’m deeply honoured to be able to represent the borough at Remembrance events this year and lay a wreath at the Cenotaph on behalf of people of Calderdale. It’s such an important occasion, where we recognise the great bravery of our armed forces and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“Together, we ensure that the important contributions of people who have served our country are never forgotten, and we wear our poppy with pride to reflect and remember.

“The Council is also showing its support for this year’s Poppy Appeal and Halifax Town Hall will fly the Royal British Legion flag throughout the campaign period.”

Calderdale Council also shows its support for Armed Forces personnel past and present, and their families, throughout the year as part of its Armed Forces Community Covenant.

The Covenant provides advice, support and the opportunity for discounts on goods and services. Find out more on the Council’s Armed Forces Personnel website: www.calderdale.gov.uk/v2/residents/community-and-living/armed-forces-personnel(external link)
