Halifax Borough Market is 130 years old, with celebrations highlighting the building’s rich heritage and bright future.
The Borough Market was first opened in 1896 by the Duke and Duchess of York, who later became King George V and Queen Mary. It’s been at the heart of retail in Halifax ever since, with its Grade II* listed status recognising the building’s stunning Victorian architecture.
To celebrate 130 years since the market opened, Calderdale Council hosted a summer fete themed event on Saturday 25 July, with visitors enjoying live music, kids’ activities, market tours and much more.
The event also highlighted the market’s long history, with historic photos on display and some traders even dressing in Victorian outfits to replicate the 19th century style of the opening event.
The anniversary is also an opportunity to explore the market and its recent transformation. £4.5 million from the Future High Streets fund has been used to update the Victorian market, helping to secure its future as a unique setting for shopping, dining, business and leisure in Halifax.
A significant part of this work has included improvement works to the building’s roof, to make the market warmer, watertight and allow more natural light to enter.
The area around the central clock has also been upgraded, with new seating and planters creating a central meeting space.
The Albany Arcade area has been transformed into an events space, allowing it to be used outside of normal market opening hours.
A plaque marking the end of the improvement programme was unveiled ahead of the anniversary celebrations, by the Deputy Mayor of Calderdale, Cllr Jackie Wilson.
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Assets and Resources, Cllr Mike Payne, said:

“Markets are an essential part of life in Calderdale and it was wonderful to celebrate 130 years of the Borough Market building. It has a fascinating history and there’s so much to be positive about for a bright future.
“The market has moved with the times, but it still retains its traditional roots with traders including fantastic butchers, grocers and bakers, alongside varied stalls and eateries with cuisines from all over the world.
“The recent transformation works have further future-proofed the market, with improvements to lighting and heating and the option to use the market outside normal opening hours, with pop-up stalls to support temporary lets or offer trials to new or young traders.
“We’re passionate about retaining what makes our markets so special, whilst also ensuring they continue to grow and flourish, supporting the next generation of market traders.”
