Calderdale Council has retained its spot at the top of the charts for household waste recycling in Yorkshire and Humberside.
Recently released figures show that Calderdale continues to lead the way in recycling in the region, with a household waste recycling rate of over 60%. It is the only authority in the Yorkshire and Humber region that is recycling over 60% of waste, and is in the top ten authorities for recycling rates nationally.
The waste collection and recycling service in Calderdale has been operated by SUEZ (formerly known as SITA) since 2008, and during this time it has evolved from a black bag, back door collection system to encompass wide ranging recycling opportunities.
SUEZ has recently been awarded the contract to deliver Calderdale’s waste collection service until 2024, and the new contract will continue to improve these already impressive recycling rates. From August 2016, residents will see the introduction of a wider range of recyclable material.
Waste and recycling is a priority for the Council, and the result reflects a big commitment to recycling across the borough, with Calderdale continuing to develop best practice. Over the last five years we have also seen a massive reduction in the amount of waste going to landfill, with less than 17% of our waste now ending up in a landfill site.
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, Cllr Barry Collins, said:
“It’s fantastic news that Calderdale continues to top the charts for recycling in Yorkshire and Humberside. We’ve also been recognised nationally for our impressive rate, retaining our top ten position for authorities across England.
“We’ve worked hard to achieve this rate, but we couldn’t have done it without the efforts of Calderdale residents, so I’d very much like to thank them for their continued commitment to recycling.
“We won’t be resting on our laurels though, and will strive to keep improving. The newly renewed contract with SUEZ will help us do this, and throughout next year we’ll be introducing more recycling options and new technology to help us recycle as much as possible and keep waste away from landfill sites.”
Chief Executive Officer of SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, David Palmer-Jones said:
“We’re extremely pleased to continue to help our partners at Calderdale to achieve such a good recycling rate. Calderdale are among a small group of authorities nationally achieving over 60% recycling and this should be applauded. I would like to thank all of the residents we serve across Calderdale for their efforts in achieving this great result.”
Residents can continue to help us to retain our excellent rate by recycling weekly. Putting out recycling for collection every week, no matter how little, helps to regulate the amount of material in the vehicles, resulting in fewer trips to the depot making for a more efficient collection. Not only that, but residents can also win great prizes, as part of the ‘Do it Weekly’ scheme which runs until July 2016.
