Calderdale is set to be one of the first places in the country to introduce a new sporting initiative.
Calderdale Sports Development, Halifax Rugby Union Club and the Rugby Football Union are introducing a new Calderdale mixed ability rugby union team, bringing players with and without disabilities together to make ‘contact’ rugby more accessible.
The team will be one of only three in the country, making it an exciting opportunity for all who want to take part.
There is a free taster session on Saturday 19 January 2013 at Halifax Rugby Union Club, Halifax, providing more information, and for those that wish to take part, there will be a short training session with professional coaches. Previous experience of rugby is not necessary, although participants do need to be 16 years or older.
The idea of the programme is to create a competitive but fun environment that challenges everyone involved. The club will develop new skills and promote a healthy lifestyle, as well as providing the social benefits which come as a result of being part of a community sports club.
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities Cllr Pauline Nash said:
” This is an exciting time for sport in Calderdale, and the introduction of a mixed ability rugby team is a fantastic development. I hope people get involved and make the most of this great opportunity. “
The taster session will take place at Halifax Rugby Union Club, Ovenden Road, Halifax, at 12.30pm on Saturday 19 January 2013. It is advisable to bring along a spare change of clothes and to wear loose sports clothing with either trainers or rugby/football boots. There will be free meals available afterwards, and parents, carers and friends are welcome to watch or join in.
