DCF 1.0There are bags of opportunities for local shoppers and aspiring entrepreneurs in Calderdale’s markets!

During Love your local market fortnight (Wednesday 15 to Wednesday 29 May 2013), there’s a great special offer and exciting events in Council-run markets across the borough. From 15 May and for a limited time only, spend £5 in any single transaction and receive a free Love your local market jute bag. From fresh local food to arts and crafts, your bag will be full to bursting!

There will be a feast of food tastings at Calderdale’s markets during the promotional fortnight. On Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 May, the Taste of Calderdale Markets event will see traders on the local produce markets in Halifax and Hebden Bridge showcasing their products with free food tasting and cooking demonstrations.

Todmorden markets have joined forces with Incredible Edible Todmorden for a traditional market with food tasting, cookery demonstrations, free entertainment and lots more throughout the day.

You can be confident that all food is grown in Calderdale if it isn’t, traders can tell you exactly where it’s from.

The Council is also offering a helping hand to fledgling businesses. Its Test trade for under a tenner campaign kicks off as part of the promotional fortnight and aims to tempt local entrepreneurs to discover market trading. The Council has teamed up with National Market Traders Federation to give would-be traders chance to apply to run a stall in any of Calderdale’s outdoor markets for under £10 a day, and in Halifax Borough Market for £10 a day, during Love your local market fortnight.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy and Environment, Cllr Barry Collins, says:

“I’m delighted that Calderdale Council is backing the national Love your local market campaign. It highlights how important markets are in providing local retail opportunities and a valuable focal point for communities. We want to bring back the buzz to Calderdale’s high streets and tempt budding entrepreneurs to discover the many benefits of market trading.

“Our Test trade for under a tenner campaign is a fantastic, low-risk way for people who want try out business ideas and see if market trading is for them, in the bustling, welcoming atmosphere of Calderdale’s markets.”
