As part of Calderdale celebrations for national Armed Forces Day, Bankfield Museum in Halifax is hosting a free family fun day on Saturday 24 June.

Armed Forces Day(external link) is an annual national event that gives communities the opportunity to show their support for the men and women of the Armed Forces including currently serving troops, service families, reservists, veterans and cadets.

From 10am-4pm on Saturday 24 June, a selection of activities and events will be taking place at Bankfield Museum, including demonstrations by historical re-enactors from the American Revolutionary War to the First World War.

There will also be a selection of modern-day weapons and vehicles on display from the Royal Yorkshire Regiment; military kit to try on; talks on the life of a soldier through the ages; and children’s craft activities.

Visitors can also enjoy the museum exhibitions and the Duke of Wellington’s Regimental Museum which is housed in Bankfield. The Museum tells the story of the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, stretching from its formation in 1702 as the 33rd Foot, to becoming part of the Yorkshire Regiment in 2006.

In addition to events at Bankfield, the Council will also be flying the Armed Forces Flag at Halifax Town Hall from Friday 23 June and throughout the following week.

The Council supports Armed Forces personnel all year round through its Armed Forces Community Covenant. The Covenant provides advice, support and the opportunity for discounts on goods and services.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Services and Communities, Cllr Jenny Lynn, said:

“Armed Forces Day is an important event to show support for those who have served and continue to serve, and as usual, we’ll be flying the Armed Forces flag throughout the week of Armed Forces Day.

“Saturday’s event at Bankfield Museum is an opportunity to learn more about military life and the important contribution of members of the armed forces, cadets and veterans, while at the same time enjoying a fun, family-friendly day out.

“The Council continues to show its support for service men and women through our Armed Forces Community Covenant, which provides services and assistance to armed forces personnel past and present, and their families.”
