Have your say on plans for Brighouse

Next Chapter

Residents and businesses in and around Brighouse are invited to share their thoughts on exciting improvement plans for the town.

A draft masterplan has been created for Brighouse town centre in partnership with the Brighouse Town Development Board, which is made up of Council representatives as well as local businesses and residents of Brighouse.  The plan will be submitted as part of a bid for funding from the Government’s Towns Fund.

Initial proposals, which have been shaped by local knowledge, build on the existing aspects that make the town special, including its unique and diverse events, the compact town centre, good accessibility and links to neighbouring towns and cities, plus its range of independent shops.

Proposals include the introduction of further facilities to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists, new public spaces around the canal, measures to help support the strong retail offer and increased leisure and recreation options.

To ensure the proposals meet the needs of local communities, a consultation is taking place for people to have their say on initial plans.

This consultation exercise will begin on Monday 29 June and ends on Monday 13 July. The detailed proposals will be available online at www.calderdalenextchapter.co.uk(external link) where there will also be an opportunity to complete the feedback form.

Responses will be used to prepare a detailed funding bid which will be submitted to the government later this year.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Resources, Cllr Jane Scullion, said:

“We’re delighted that Brighouse has been identified as one of the towns to be included in the government’s Town Deals funding initiative. We know the town has a lot to offer and this funding will enable us to build upon the many positives already found in the town.

“To support our bid for this significant funding, we’ve prepared a masterplan for the town which looks to build on the strengths of Brighouse and make improvements to the areas which are felt to be holding it back.

“Our initial plan has been created with support from the town’s development board and we’re now seeking further input from the wider Brighouse community to ensure the plan meets the needs of local people.

“All feedback received will be reviewed and used to help shape detailed plans which are due to be submitted in autumn this year.”
