A new mobile community pop-up shop is bringing affordable, healthy food to Mixenden.
On Tuesday 24 June 2025, Mixenden Community Hub welcomed Community Shop’s ‘On the Go’ van on its first visit.
The pop-up shop, stocked with a wide range of fresh, nutritious produce at very low prices, now stops off at Mixenden Hub every other Tuesday. Its next visit will be Tuesday 22 July 2025 and everyone is welcome.
Calderdale Council has introduced this service in partnership with Community Shop and Nestlé.
Community Shop On the Go uses surplus food from trusted suppliers, helping to reduce food waste – a win for the environment as well as the community.
Cllr Sarah Courtney, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, said:
“With living costs rising, we know it can be a struggle for many people to afford to put food on the table. We care about making a difference to people’s lives, we work hard with partner organisations to tackle poverty and we’re ambitious for the future of north Halifax.
“Supporting families, improving access to healthy, affordable food and encouraging healthier lifestyles is a priority in our North Halifax Strategy – a 10-year commitment to invest in and transform the area, in line with our priority for thriving towns and places.
“When we launched Mixenden Community Hub as part of this strategy, we wanted it to be a place at the heart of the local community where residents could access many services and opportunities to help make life better. Community Shop On the Go is another milestone in the North Halifax Strategy and a great helping hand for local people with stretched budgets. Their response has been so positive, with many welcoming the convenience, affordability and friendliness of the service.”
Matthew Coley, Head of Community Retail at Community Shop, said:
“We are very excited to bring Community Shop ‘On the Go’ to Mixenden and expand the support we provide to more families. People are still feeling the effects of the cost-of-living crisis and our pop-up shop enables us to reach more people and provide more access to affordable, healthy food.”
The Council is looking into extending the Community Shop On the Go service to Ovenden / Illingworth in future, so that all parts of north Halifax can benefit from access to nutritious, low-cost food.
Other recent transformative work in north Halifax includes the rebuilding of fire-damaged Ash Green Community Primary School, Active Calderdale initiatives to make movement part of everyday life, plans to make walking and cycling easier and to improve access between north Halifax and Halifax town centre, and community-led initiatives funded by the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), including improvements to Beechwood and Sunny Bank parks.
