People are invited to have their say on proposals to make it easier and safer for people of all ages to walk, cycle, rest and play on routes around schools in Pellon, Halifax.
The Pellon Routes to Schools project is a package of proposals designed to make walking, cycling and wheeling journeys safer and easier. This particularly applies to trips to and from local schools like Ling Bob Junior Infant and Nursery School and Christ Church Pellon C of E (VC) Primary School.
Using feedback from a survey conducted in 2022, the Council has now developed proposals for improvements at six locations around Rye Lane and Highroad Well Lane in Pellon. The proposals include junction improvements, pedestrian crossings, narrowing of vehicle lanes, traffic calming and footway widening.
People are now being asked to share their thoughts on the proposals to help shape their further development.
The proposals are available online at https://engage.calderdale.gov.uk/en-GB/projects/pellon-routes-to-school-consultation.(external link) People are invited to view the plans and share their feedback using the online survey. The consultation closes on Sunday 26 January 2025.
There’s also the opportunity to meet the team and discuss the proposals at The Hub @ Pellon, 53/55 Rye Lane, Pellon, Halifax, on Wednesday 15 January 2025, from 2pm to 6pm.
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Action and Housing, Cllr Scott Patient, said:
“We want to make it easier for people to choose active ways to travel and spend their time. Using feedback from previous consultations, we’ve developed a package of improvements to make travelling to and from local primary schools in Pellon easier and safer, making walking, cycling or wheeling a more viable option.
“The proposals also aim to improve connections between local facilities and residential areas, making the area a more pleasant place for everyone to live, walk around and enjoy themselves.
“Leaving the car at home, especially for shorter journeys, is not only great for people’s health and wellbeing, it also benefits our environment by reducing traffic and emissions – supporting our net zero ambitions. Choosing active ways to get to and from schools can help children to develop habits that last a lifetime, supporting healthier lifestyles in the future.”
Deputy chair of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport Committee, Cllr Peter Carlill said:
“We’re on a mission across West Yorkshire to build a greener and better-connected region.
“That is why I am delighted that we will soon see these plans come to life, making it easier and safer for children in Pellon to get to school without having to travel by car.”
