On Sunday 12 November, people across the country will commemorate Remembrance Sunday, and events are taking place across Calderdale to mark this important occasion.
To coincide with the launch of the national Royal British Legion’s 2023 Poppy Appeal, Calderdale Council has announced plans for this year’s Remembrance, with the Council hosting a full Remembrance Sunday event in Halifax.
The main focus of commemorations in Halifax will be the Remembrance Sunday parade. This year, the parade will start at the Piece Hall with dignitaries and veterans arriving from 10am. People who wish to line the streets and watch the parade are asked to do so from the south gate exit of the Piece Hall.
The parade will leave at 10.30am and will arrive at the Cenotaph near Halifax Minster for the service and Act of Remembrance at 10.45am with a two-minute silence at 11am. A further service of remembrance will then take place inside the Minster.
Events are also taking place in towns and villages in Calderdale, with services at war memorials or local Churches across the borough.
The Mayor of Calderdale, Cllr Ashley Evans, said:
“Remembrance events are held across the borough and offer an opportunity for people to come together and show their gratitude to all those who have served their country. It’s also a time to commemorate the sacrifice many have made, remembering those who have lost their lives in service, or have been left with mental or physical scars.
“I’m honoured to be representing the borough and taking part in the Remembrance Sunday events in Halifax town centre and laying a wreath at the Cenotaph on behalf of the people of Calderdale.”
Each year, around 300,000 Royal British Legion volunteers take to the streets with poppies and collecting boxes, raising millions of pounds for the Poppy Appeal. The money collected at this time, and from numerous other fundraising activities throughout the year, goes to providing help and support to serving and ex-Service men and women and their dependents.
Calderdale Council also shows its support for Armed Forces personnel past and present, and their families, throughout the year as part of its Armed Forces Community Covenant.
