Yorkshire continues to wow the world after winning a global travel Oscar for the fourth year running.

Welcome to Yorkshire has beaten campaigns from the likes of Expedia, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airlines to win World’s Leading Marketing Campaign at the World Travel Awards.

Tracy Commons, from Welcome to Yorkshire, collected the award at a gala dinner at La Cigale Hotel in Doha, Qatar.

The ‘Have a brilliant Yorkshire’ campaign won the public vote thanks to its mix of TV ads, product placement on Emmerdale and creative outdoor advertising such as taking over Kings Cross station.

Kevin Taylor, Senior Group Vice President, World Travel Awards said:

“Yorkshire is undoubtedly a beautiful destination for a short break or longer holiday with a great mixture of heritage, culture, fabulous landscapes, charming fishing villages and beautiful countryside. Welcome to Yorkshire present what the county has to offer in a subtle yet exciting way which has clearly charmed the travel professionals and general public who voted in sufficient numbers to secure the award for Yorkshire. “

The win is the latest high profile triumph for the county which has been named the third best region in the world to visit by Lonely Planet for 2014 and is in the top 10 best world holiday destinations in 2014 by AOL Travel. Hull in Yorkshire has recently been named UK City of Culture 2017 and Yorkshire is the top place for Brits to visit outside London by TripAdvisor.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said:

“When we started on this journey in 2009, our aim was to make Yorkshire one of the best destinations to visit in the world.

“Now four years on, it’s not just us saying that. The Tour de France is coming, Lonely Planet and AOL are saying the county is among the best in the world to visit, we’ve got the UK City of Culture 2017 and now we have won the World’s Leading Marketing Campaign for the fourth consecutive year. This award keeps the county under the global spotlight and keeps the world talking about Yorkshire.”

Welcome to Yorkshire has now won eight European and World Travel Awards since it launched in 2009 beating globally recognised travel brands and some of the world’s leading tourism agencies.

Finalists for this year’s World’s Leading Marketing Campaign included: Air New Zealand, Avis, British Airways, Carnival Cruise Lines, Easyjet, Expedia, First Choice, Marriott, Thomson, United, Virgin Atlantic Airlines and Welcome to Yorkshire.
