Hebden Bridge Market has been crowned one of Britain’s best markets in a prestigious national competition.
The popular market has been namedBest Small Outdoor Market in the Great British Market Awards run by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA).
Cllr Barry Collins, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said:
“This is a real honour for Hebden Bridge Market. Awards like this put our markets on the national map, and we hope it will encourage many more people to come to Hebden Bridge and enjoy the unique shopping atmosphere, especially after the Boxing Day floods.
“The impacts of the flooding make this award even more special. Hebden Bridge Market made an amazing recovery and was up and running again in no time.”
The market was praised for its excellent work at the heart of the community, especially in the face of flood challenges. The judges said that with many businesses unable to trade, the market has continued to regenerate the town with additional markets being operated to revitalise trade, promote community wellbeing and encourage visitors. They named the market “an outstanding success and an example for others to learn from”.
The Best Small Outdoor Market award is the latest of many national accolades that the Council’s markets service has won thanks to the hard work of markets manager John Walker, his team, the many traders and customers.
John has worked for the Council’s markets service for nearly 35 years and is passionate about the success of all of the borough’s markets. He said:
“Hebden Bridge Market, and the others across Calderdale, continue to hold a valued place in our towns. They are bursting at the seams with energy and friendliness – a place where people can socialise, buy local products and support local traders.”
BMA President, Councillor Mick Barker, said:
“The Great British Market Awards showcase the depth and breadth of talent that there is across this country’s market industry. This year saw more categories than ever before and recognises everyone from small community markets and special events to the large food markets. This is what makes the British market industry so diverse and so special.”
Last year Calderdale Council’s Markets Working Group announced plans to move Hebden Bridge Market from its current location in Valley Road Car Park to Lees Yard on the edge of St George’s Square, to bring it right to the heart of the town.
The intention is to create a bigger and more regular market, increasing from the current two days a week to four, with modern facilities for shoppers and traders.
Consultation is being carried out with local shoppers and traders to give them the chance to help shape the new design and layout. The Council is listening carefully to all feedback received and hopes to bring forward an agreed scheme for the relocated market this year.
