One month until Safeguarding Week returns

Safeguarding week

There’s just one month to go until Safeguarding Week returns to Calderdale, helping to raise awareness of everyone’s role in protecting vulnerable children and adults.

Hosted by Calderdale Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children Boards, the week will be marked by events taking place across the borough from 17 to 23 October 2016.

The programme of activities, events and training will highlight support available in Calderdale, for professionals and members of the public.

Leader of Calderdale Council, Cllr Tim Swift said:

“We’re supporting Safeguarding Week to help raise awareness of this important issue.  It’s essential that everyone knows how they can support vulnerable adults and children, how to spot any potential issues and where to go if they need help.”

Safeguarding Week will be officially launched by the Mayor of Calderdale at an event starting at 12.30pm on Monday 17 October 2016 at the Woolshops, Halifax.

Speeches by the Chairs of Safeguarding Children and Adult Boards will be followed by performances from a children’s dance group and a choir, then music from Phoenix Radio.

Market stalls run by safeguarding agencies, including Calderdale Council, the Alzheimer’s Society, the Basement Project, Yorkshire Smokefree Calderdale and South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust will provide information and advice on keeping people safe.

People who can’t make it to an event during Safeguarding Week can still show their support by tweeting a picture of themselves holding the message ‘Safeguarding’s my business’ and using the hashtag #SafeCdale16.

There’s also still time for youngsters to get involved, by entering the Young Advisors’ Safeguarding competition, where two lucky winners will receive a £30 prize and two runners up will receive £20 each.  This is a competition organised for young people by young people as part of Safeguarding Week with categories for primary school and secondary school aged children.

Anyone under the age of 18 can enter, either on their own or as part of a group. To enter design an eye-catching collage or poster which shows young people how to keep themselves safe.

Entries can be submitted through any Calderdale school or youth worker or posted to:

Allison Waddell, Young Advisors’ Safeguarding competition, Calderdale Safeguarding Children Board, Northgate House, Northgate Halifax HX1 1UN

The closing date for entries is Friday 23September 2016 and the winners and runners up will be invited to attend the Safeguarding Week launch event on Monday 17 October 2016.
